Litter hotspots

Where litter may be building up — and places where it has been reported again after a clean.

No league table of people. Just a useful place to start.

Not enough nearby records yet

A hotspot needs at least two nearby reports or uncleared areas, or a later report after a nearby clean. No sample places are added.

Report a real spot

A safer plan

  • Check the place first. Old reports may no longer be right.
  • Choose public paths. Check access, weather and tides before you go.
  • Use gloves and a litter picker. Stay away from roads, steep banks and water edges.
  • Leave needles, chemicals, heavy items and fly-tipping for the council.
  • Agree how bags will be collected. See council pick-up help.
  • Take breaks. A small safe clean is enough.
How these places are found

We group checked reports and small uncleared map areas when every pair is within 200 m. Two records form a hotspot. Records may describe the same litter.

A single report also qualifies if it is dated on a later day than a visible clean within 150 m. This means litter may have returned nearby, not proof of the exact same pile. Undated records cannot prove a return.

Only visible approved reports, visible cleans and visible uncleared areas count. Bag pick-up points, hidden, pending, deleted and binned records do not count. Private places are excluded. Town-only quick-clear pins are not used.

Areas come from saved pins or a recorded council, never a guessed nearest town. Large marked areas are left out of these small clusters. Dates are UK calendar dates. The map uses all dates; it is not a survey of every littered place.

First we show places reported again, then those with the most nearby records. A checked report disappearing after a clean may remove a hotspot. Counts can go down: that is useful, not a lost reward.
