Group pick guidelines
Ayrshire Cleans · ayrshirecleans.co.uk · [email protected]
Please note: this is simple guidance for a group litter pick. It is not a risk assessment and it does not replace your organisation's own paperwork. Use your own forms, signed off by your group leader.
Who does what
- Ayrshire Cleans: helps find a spot, shares what we know about the route, and helps ask the council to collect the bags.
- The organisation or group: staff supervision, transport, permissions and its own risk assessment.
Traffic
- Stay well back from roads. Keep a clear gap between pickers and any traffic.
- Wear hi-vis near roads or car parks. Never step onto the road to reach litter.
Do not touch
- Needles or syringes, sharp metal, lots of broken glass, chemicals, or anything that looks dangerous. Leave it, keep everyone away, and tell an adult. An adult reports it to the council.
- Use litter pickers (grabbers) and strong gloves. No bare hands.
Clothes and footwear
- Sturdy, closed shoes or boots. No sandals.
- Clothes for the weather. Check the forecast first. Near the shore, check the tide.
Young people
- Under-16s must be with an adult at all times.
- Agree a meeting point and a time to regroup.
Tell someone
- Tell someone who is not on the outing where you are going and when you'll be back.
- Carry a charged phone and a first aid kit.
After
- Everyone washes their hands, even if they wore gloves.
- Tie bags and leave them where agreed for collection.
- Take a Before and an After photo (no young people's faces) and log it at ayrshirecleans.co.uk/log-a-cleanup.
